Deuteronomy 4

Observation & Interpretation

Deut. 4:23-24 – The people were to take care and not forget the covenant of the LORD their God, not to make a carved image, the form of anything that the LORD had forbidden because He is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Deut. 4:25-27 – If they acted corruptly or worshiped idols, they would not live long in the land they were to possess; they would be scattered among the peoples and be few in number.

Deut. 4:32-34 – Speaking through Moses, God asked multiple rhetorical questions that demonstrated His power and supremacy over other gods that were no gods at all.

Application

In Deut. 4:29, the people are told that they would seek the LORD their God and find Him, if they search after Him with their heart and soul. All the more compelling is that this verse directly followed how the people had served gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands. It should never grow old that the God who made the heavens and the earth is searchable and findable despite our wickedness. He is righteous and holy—wondrous in splendor and majesty beyond any human comprehension—and yet humbled Himself so as to walk among us and be crucified in our stead. How underserving we are and how awesome is our God to lavish us with such grace.

2 Corinthians 8

Observation & Interpretation

2 Cor. 8:9 – Paul confirmed with the Corinthian church that they knew the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, how although He was rich, He became poor so that, by His poverty, they might become rich.

Application

I speaking of Jesus being rich, Paul acknowledged His preexistence as the Son of God. He was with the Father and shared in His glory, but condescended from His throne of ultimate exaltation to live in poverty among man. This He did in order that we might become rich, the most gracious exchange ever to take place. He lowered Himself so that we would be lifted up, took on death so that we could be made alive. With what incessant praise should our hearts ever sing to the God of all glory.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, how amazing is Your grace that You would look upon us as You do. Lord, help me to never grow weary of the truth of Your gospel.
