2 Samuel 19
Observation & Interpretation
2 Sam. 19:5-7 – Joab rebuked David for his lament over the loss of his son, Absalom, stating that David love those who hated him and hated those who loved him; that he would be pleased if Absalom was still alive and David’s commanders and servants were dead.
- David’s disposition toward his enemies seem to reflect Jesus’ words in Luke 6:27-31; Matt. 5:44
2 Sam. 19:9-10 – The tribes of Israel sensed that a public restoring of King David to his throne might help the nation heal from the wounds of its civil war. (CSB Notes)
2 Sam. 19:13 – David appointed Amasa as commander of his army
- Amasa was a captain who supported Absalom in his rebellion against his father David. (BEB)
- David’s appointment of Amasa, who had headed Absalom’s army (17:25), as commander of his army indicated that David planned to bear no animosity toward those who had sided with Absalom. (CSB Notes)
2 Sam. 19:18-20 – Shemei confessed that he had sinned. He was trying to atone for his sin by being the first one of the house of Joseph (the northern tribes, Am. 5:6) to welcome David back as king. (CSB Notes)
2 Sam. 19:21 – Abishai offered for a second time to kill Shimei for his harsh words against the LORD’s anointed (16:9). (CSB Notes)
2 Sam. 19:22 – sons of Zeruiah Occasionally used in a derogatory manner to indicate their violence. (FSB)
Matthew 26
Observation & Interpretation
Matt. 26:14-15 – If the thirty pieces of silver are thirty shekels, the amount was equal to 120 days’ wages. Thus by his traitorous act Judas earned an amount of money that equaled only one-third of the value of Mary’s lavish gift (see note at v. 7). (CSB Notes)
Matt. 26:17-30 – Sins demand atonement (or punishment), and payments must be made in kind. Bankers to no accept home-cooked meals as repayment of loans, and the blood of a lamb or bull cannot cover human sin. Jesus gives His life as a ransom on behalf of, in the place of, many (Matt. 20:28). (ESVEC – Response)
