1 Chronicles 2
Observation & Interpretation
1 Chronicles 2:16 – Abigail was a sister of David
- In this passage we are given the names of David’s six older brothers and his two much older sisters “Zeruiah” and “Abigail”. (CSB Notes)
1 Chronicles 1:30, 32 – The Chronicler mentions two people who died childless: Seled and Jether.
1 Chronicles 1:3-55 – Te opening verses are reminders of wrongdoing and its consequences (1 Chron. 2:3, 7), but the grace of God is seen in the continuing family line leading to David. (ESVEC – Section Overview)
- Recounting past failure and disobedience, and how God word in that situation, is an opportunity to reflect on both the consequences of “breaking faith” and his grace that continues to lead us on. (ESVEC – Response)
John 12
Observation & Interpretation
John 12:9 – Some of the crowd that heard the voice from heaven said that it hand thundered while other said that an angel spoke to Jesus.
- Some of those standing by mistook the voice of God for thunder. Such people are always trying to put a natural explanation on spiritual things. Men who are unwilling to accept the fact of miracles try to explain the miracles away by some natural law. Others knew it was not thunder, and yet they did not recognize it as the voice of God. Realizing it must have been superhuman, they could only conclude that it was the voice of “an angel”. God’s voice can only be heard and understood by those who are helped by the Holy Spirit. People can listen to the gospel over and over, and yet it might be ever so meaningless to them unless the Holy Spirit speak to them through it. (BBC)
John 12:48 – Jess spoke of how the one who rejects Him has a judge.
- God the Father is already the judge Jesus does not need to be…Although God the Father is the judge Jesus’ message is the same as that of God the Father (v. 50); His words against those who choose not to enter into a relationship with Him and will be true and will be true on the day of judgment. (FSB)
John 12:34-50 – If we love the empty glory we stand to gain from worldly people for worldly reasons, we cannot have the glory that comes from God. But if we love God’s glory, we will consider the world’s glory to be rubbish. (ESVEC – Response)
