Judges 19
Observation & Interpretation
Judges 19:10 – (4-10) With the late start on the fifth day, they make it as far as Jebus, the city that will become Jerusalem. (ESVEC – Comment)
Judges 19:11-15 – It is telling that not one Benjaminite from the city extends an offer of hospitality to the Levite and his traveling companions. This is yet another hint at the corruption of the inhabitants of the city, preparing us for the tragic events that soon follow. (ESVEC – Comment)
Judges 19:16-21 – The old man [who offers hospitality to the Levite] is not a native of the city but is a sojourner from the hill country of Ephraim, as is the Levite (v. 1)…Having lived in the city as a sojourner, the old man is likely aware of the moral corruption of the men in that city. Thus he warns the Levite “Only do not spend the night in the square” (v. 20). (ESVEC – Comment)
2 Peter 3
Observation & Interpretation
2 Peter 3:3 – Scoffing at God and His promises never stands alone in a moral vacuum; it is accompanied by a self-directed morality that indulges the whims of the individual. (ESVEC – Comment)
2 Peter 3:8 – The expression here [”with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day”] should be understood not as a strict mathematical formula but as a general maxim revealing God’s perception and experience of time. (ESVEC – Comment)
2 Peter 3:14-18 – God’s glory is not just the means by which he calls us into a relationship with him (1:3); it is also the ultimate goal of lives of godliness and holiness (3:18). (ESVEC – Response)
