1 Samuel 21

Observation & Interpretation

1 Sam. 21:1 – David came to Nob (not to be confused with the land of Nod [Gen. 4:16]).

1 Sam. 21:4 – Ahimelech the priest offered David holy bread, but with the condition that the men had kept themselves from women.

  • Indicates that men have not had sexual relations with women, a stipulation often attached to holy wars and worship ceremonies (e.g. Exod. 19:15). The men needed to be ceremonially clean to eat the holy bread. (FSB)

1 Sam. 21:8-9 – David inquired of a spear or sword of Ahimelech and Ahimelech offered the sword of Goliath.

  • The text doest not explain how the sword of Goliath ended up in the tabernacle when David had earlier put it in his own tent (17:54). Perhaps David later had dedicated it to the Lord as some kind of offering. (CSB Notes)

1 Sam. 21:12-13 – David’s fear of Achish, king of Gath, led him to pretend that he was insane.

  • When the Philistines became suspicious of him, he was forced to act the madman to save his life. (BBC)

Revelation 19

Observation & Interpretation

Rev. 19:7-8 – The voice of the multitude called for rejoicing and exultation, to give God the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and his Bride has made herself ready.

  • The tribulation is past. Babylon has been judged. Now the marriage of the Lamb has come. The church, the wife of Christ, has prepared herself for the soul-thrilling occasion. She is arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, which is explained as symbolizing the righteous acts of the saints. (BBC)

Rev. 21:20-21 – The beast and false prophet were thrown alive into the lake of fire and the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the white horse.
