2 Samuel 12
Observation & Interpretation
2 Sam. 12:11-12 – In Nathan’s confrontation of David, he spoke of what would happen as a result of David’s wrongdoing and that they will happen “in sight of the sun” and “before the sun”.
- This seems to mean that these things will happen publicly.
- In broad daylight This will occur in plain sight of all Israel. (FSB)
2 Sam. 12:18 – The servants of David were afraid to tell David that the son of Uriah’s wife had died, fearing that he would harm himself.
- David’s servants feared the king would harm himself because it was his sin that caused the child to die. (FSB)
2 Sam. 12:23 – Since David could not bring the child back from the dead, he saw no point in confirming to mourn for him. (FSB)
2 Sam. 12:25 – To commemorate His love for Solomon, Yahweh instructs David to give him the name Jedidiah (”beloved of Yahweh”)…This name is not mentioned anywhere else. It is possible that Jedidiah was his given name, and Solomon was his throne name. It was not unusual in the ancient Near East for kings to reign under a different name than their given name. (FSB)
Matthew 19
Observation & Interpretation
Matt. 19:10-12 – In answer to the disciples on how it is better not to marry, Jesus provides the illustration of eunuchs of three kinds
- Eunuchs from birth
- Eunuchs who have been made eunuchs my men
- Eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven
- [Re: the third kind of eunuch] These men could be married and they have no physical impairment. Yet in dedication to the King and His kingdom, they willingly forgo marriage in order to give themselves to the cause of Christ without distraction. (BBC)
Application
Matt. 19:16-30 – Chapter 19 teaches that no one can exceed the basic obedience required of all. Jesus pushes proud men of action not to do more but to see more clearly…(Jesus rewards our devotion, but not because we earn a reward). (ESVEC – Response)
