1 Chronicles 17
Observation & Interpretation
1 Chron. 17:2-4 – Nathan told David to do al that was in his heart regarding the dwelling place of the ark, but the LORD came to him the same night with a word to tell David that he would not be the one to build a house for the LORD to dwell in.
- [David’s] desire to build a house for the LORD met with Nathan’s hasty approval. But then the LORD corrected Nathan: David was not the man chosen for the task. (BBC)
1 Chron. 17:13 – The LORD said to David through Nathan that He would not take His steadfast love from David as He had taken it from who was before David.
- whoever was before you Refers to Saul, who was rejected as king (1 Chron. 10:13-14; 1 Sam. 15:10-11). (FSB)
1 Chron. 17:1-27 – David’s plan and Nathan’s initial encouragement are not acts of disobedience or presumption or lack of trust but commendable expressions of desire to honor God in ways recognized in the wider community. Their heart commitment is evident in their responses to God’s different plan, showing no hint of reluctance or disappointment. (ESVEC – Response)
Acts 6
Observation & Interpretation
Acts 6:2 -The twelve disciples said that it was not right to give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
- The twelve appointed priority of preaching the Word of God.
- The disciples remind other believers their true responsibility to teach the message of God and witness to Christ—the main priority of the Church. (FSB)
Acts 6:3 – The twelve said to pick out seven from among them, men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom who could be appointed for the duty.
- Not just anyone was to be given the task; only those of good repute, filled with the Spirit and wisdom.
- To protect the holiness of the community and to safeguard impartiality in the distribution of goods, the community must choose people who have shown themselves godly and wise. The qualifications of these leaders is similar to the more elaborate list given for the office of deacon in 1 Tim. 3:8-13. (FSB)
