1 Chronicles 22
Observation & Interpretation
1 Chron. 22:2-5 – David was not to build the house of God himself, but he prepared materials for it to be built by his son, Solomon.
- [David] began to make preparations for construction, though he knew that Solomon was the one who would have the privilege of building the temple. (BBC)
1 Chron. 22:14 – David prepared fr the house with great pains.
- The preparation process was difficult and arduous.
- The listing of materials (gold, silver, bronze and iron) increased progressively in quantity (100k talents, a million talents, “beyond weighing”, respectively).
1 Chron. 22:16 – David compelled Solomon to “Arise and work! The LORD be with you.”
- [David] ended with advice that all Christians do well to heed: “Arise and begin working, and the Lord be with you.” (BBC)
1 Chron. 22:19 – David spoke of how the house would be “built for the name of the LORD.”
- David conveys the supreme value of the Lord’s name.
- the name of Yahweh Just as God promised to make David’s name great (see 17:8…), David wanted the temple of God’s name great…(FSB)
1 Chron. 22:1-19 – While chapters 22-29 are unique to Chronicles, they contain many parallels to the transition from Moses to Joshua. Both Moses and David were disqualified from completing what they had desired (Moses, enter the land; David, building a temple), but both made preparations and gave charges to the people as a whole and to their successors. Acts 11
Observation & Interpretation
Acts 11:18 – The circumcision party in Jerusalem fell silent after Peter told them how the Holy Spirit had fallen on Gentiles. They realized that God also granted Gentiles with repentance that leads to life.
- It is to the credit of the Hebrew Christians that when they had heard Peter’s account, they recognized the hand of God in it and did a complete about-face. All their objections were gone. In their place was praise to God for granting to the Gentiles repentance to life. (BBC)
Acts 11:20 – Some of the men from Cyprus and Cyrene spoke and preached the Lord Jesus to the Hellenists (Greek-speaking non-Jews)
- The evangelization of Antioch was carried out by believers from Cyprus and Cyrene. As a result, Antioch became the center of the Gentile mission and the church that sent Paul out as a missionary (see chaps. 13 and following). (CSB Notes)
Acts 11:26 – The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
- The term “Christians” probably came from Romans who labeled Jesus’s followers in Antioch “little Christs”. Though it was likely intended as an offense, the label is actually an honor insomuch as it indicates disciples are living Christlike lives. (CSB Notes)
Acts 11:29-30 – Barnabas and Saul were sent by the disciples as relief to the brothers living in Judea.
- The church at Antioch determined to provide relief for the believers in Judea. In so doing, they gave back to the churches and believers who had brought the gospel to Antioch and abroad in the first place. (CSB Notes)
