2 Kings 16
Observation & Interpretation
2 Kings 16:6 – Rezin, king of Syria, recovered Elath and drove the men of Judah from Elath.
- The city changed hands several times.
- Unlike Amaziah’s voluntary idolatry with the gods of Edom (2 Chron. 25:14), Ahaz’s idolatry was forced on him by his submission to Assyria. Ahaz’s imported altar was the cultic symbol of his submission to Assyria’s main god. The priest Uriah represented the complicity of some priests and Levites in this religious corruption. (CSB Notes)
John 1
Observation & Interpretation
John 1:1-18 – For those of us who believe that Jesus is the light, we should not that John the Evangelist has joined John the Baptist in bearing witness so that others will believe (20:31). Those of us who believe should join these two Johns in the great work of bearing witness for belief. Testify that the light has dawned. Call others to faith in Christ (ESVEC – Response)
John 1:19-51 – Instead [of asking other possible questions, the disciples] ask, “Rabbi (which means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’” (v. 31). When they come to Jesus, they come to him as their teacher, and their main concern is to be with him. (ESVEC – Comment)
