Proverbs 30-31
Observation & Interpretation
Chapter 30 contains an oracle of Agur, son of Jakeh. He speaks of how man is weary, has no wisdom and has no knowledge of the Holy One. Every word of God proves true and He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. The author asks that he be dispossessed of falsehood and lying. He asks that he neither be poor and steal and profane the name of his God or rich and deny Him. Several of the proverbs follow the “three things…four” pattern.
Chapter 31 is the final chapter of proverbs and are an oracle of the mother of King Lumuel. She speaks of how a king is to conduct himself, to not drink wine, open their mouths for the poor and judge righteously. She describes an excellent wife and all her attributes and she is to be given the fruit of the king’s hands and that her works are to praise her in the gates.
Ephesians 1
Observation & Interpretation
Paul opens his letter to the church Ephesus with a greeting and then speaks of the blessedness of God who has blessed the church in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. God chose His people before the foundation of the world, predestined for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ. God made known the mystery of His will according to His purpose which He set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time. In Christ, we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the purpose of His will. Those who believe in Him are sealed with the Holy Spirit, the guarantee of their inheritance until the acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.
Paul ceaselessly prayed for them, having heard of their faith of the Lord Jesus, asking that God would give them the Spirit of wisdom and of the revelation in the knowledge of Him. This, so that they may know what is the hope to which He has called them, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward those who believe. God worked His great might in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places. He put all things under His feet and gave Him the church as head over all things, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
