Joshua 15

Observation & Interpretation

Josh. 15:17 – Othniel was Caleb’s nephew and a member of the Kenizite clan. Consequently, the marriage remained within the clan (FSB)

Josh. 15:63 – The people of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites, so the Jebusites dwelled with the people in that day

  • Jebus, the city of the Jebusites, is identified with Jerusalem (see 18:28; Judges 19:10-11) (FSB)

Josh. 15:13-19 – Othniel is referred to as Caleb’s younger brother in Judges 1:13; this additional detail does not appear in Joshua (ESVEC – Comment)

Application

Josh. 15:1-63 – The embedding here of the account of Caleb, Othniel and especially Achsah may seem odd, but it serves to root the national story in the lives of individuals, must as has been seen positively in Rahab and negatively in Achan in preceding chapters (ESVEC – Response)

Titus 2

Observation & Interpretation

Titus 2:12:13 – Paul speaks of both the present age and what is to come, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ

Titus 2:14 – Jesus gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works

Titus 2:1 – Sound doctrine is the life-blood of Christian faith. It is the life-giving, authoritative deposit of truth. (ESVEC – Comment)

TItus 2:1 – The “self-controlled” person is “intent on the what, the how, and the when of doing what should be done.” – Aristotle (ESVEC – Comment)

Titus 2:11 – An upright life is the necessary outflow of experienceing the grace of God. IF that kind of transformation is absent, then so also is the grace of God absent. (ESVEC – Comment)

TItus 2:12 – Even though Christians are not yet what they will be in the age to come, God’s grace nevertheless has transforming effects on the sinner’s character in advance ofhtat day. Grace does not produce perfection in this life, but it does decisively change the direction of the sinner’s life. (ESVEC – Comment)
