1 Samuel 31

Observation & Interpretation

1 Sam. 31:1 – A shift of focus from David in the previous chapter to the Philistines fighting against Saul.

1 Sam. 31:4 – Saul’s armor-bearer would not thrust Saul through because he feared him greatly

  • Saul feared the Philistines would capture him alive and perhaps treat him as they had treated Samson in the judges period (Jdg 16:21). Saul’s armor-bearer, however, was paralyzed with fear and would not bring himself to obey the king’s request (run me through), So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. (CSB Notes)

1 Sam. 31:6 – Saul, his three sons, his armor-bearer and all his men died on the same day together.

  • A swift and comprehensive death for Saul and company.

Matthew 7

Observation & Interpretation

Matt. 7:16 – The false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing are recognized by their fruits.

  • … a prophet’s character and behavior (his fruit) indicates whether he is true or false…True disciples bear their fruit of good works, and this confirms their identity as Jesus’ disciples. (Mt 7:21-23)

Matt. 7:13-29 – … genuine discipleship demonstrates itself in the vitality of its works (vv. 15-20). Good deeds are both the result and the demonstration of salvation. Works cannot save, but living faith must work. (ESVEC – Response)
