Numbers 32-33

Observation & Interpretation

Chapters 32 and 33 describe how the people of Reuben and Gad sought to settle east of the Jordan, the confusion and dissension that arose with Moses as a result, the agreement made to allow them settlement in the Transjordan territory if they joined Israel in driving out their enemies as well as a recounting of Israel’s journey throughout the wilderness. Regarding the situation with Reuben, Gad and Moses, it seems worth noting that Moses interpretation of their request was that it was rooted in the desire not to go to war. Upon hearing what they wanted to do, Moses recounted what their fathers had done in discouraging the heart of the people of Israel and assumed that the two tribes were doing the same. Reuben and Gad assured Moses three times of their intent to fight for the land west of the Jordan (Num. 32:16-42), resolving the conflict and defining the terms of the arrangement.

This occasion presents for us a helpful example of misunderstanding and conflict resolution. As the discourse plays out, the parties work together to establish a path forward that would both honor the Lord’s command to take the land that had been promised and allow Reuben and Gad to dwell in a place where their livestock would thrive. As we encounter like situations of dispute, may we draw from this text how to strive for a God-honoring and mutually beneficial outcome.
