Matthew 16
Observation & Interpretation
When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread (v. 5). Jesus told them they were to watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees (v. 6). Continuing in their focus on food, the disciples discussed among themselves that they had brought no bread (v. 7). Aware of this, Jesus questioned their faith and asked why they were discussing among themselves the fact that they had no bread (v. 8). He asked them if they remembered the feeding of the five thousand and four thousand and how many baskets were gathered (v. 10). Jesus confronted their failure to understand that He was not speaking about literal bread but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees (v. 11). The disciples then realized that Jesus was not speaking about the leaven of the bread but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees (v. 12).
Application
It is helpful to see the misplaced attention of the disciples in this discourse because it illuminates how susceptible we are to misunderstanding and misinterpretation. When our thoughts are centered around a particular topic or circumstance, we can mistakenly view everything through that lens and miss what God is trying to help us to see. God has graciously provided an ability for acute concentration, but it can be to our detriment when it blocks peripheral realities. Because of this, the necessity for healthy, Christian community becomes all the more apparent. As we engage with fellowship with other believers who love and care for us in Christlikeness (and care for them in the same manner), God’s grace manifests through them in granting us other perspectives. When we invite others to speak Biblical and gospel truths into our lives, we allow them to break in to our tunneled vision, fostering dissonance and subsequent growth. Praise God for His church and of the masterful work He performs in the intentional, relational gathering of the saints.
