1 Chronicles 15

Observation & Interpretation

In this chapter, David displays a renewed effort of obedience to the LORD through a number of initiatives. After building houses for himself in the city of David, Jerusalem, he prepared a place for the ark of God, pitching a tent for it, adhering to what “was the pattern found in the law” (BBC) (v. 1). He also said that no one but the Levites was to carry the ark of God, for God had chosen the Levites to carry the ark and minister to Him forever (v. 2). David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring the ark of the LORD to its place (v. 3) and the Levites carried the ark on their shoulders with the poles as Moses had commanded according to the word of the LORD (v. 15). This was in contrast to having previously carried the ark via cart and the tragedy that resulted (1 Chron 13).

Application

David’s revived faithfulness by proceeding in accord to the LORD’s command provides for us a helpful model or repentance. Having experienced the disaster that unfolded when the ark was wrongly carried by cart—the death of Uzzah and the ark being taken to Obed-edom—David now “made diligent search in the law and then proceeded accordingly.” (BBC) Sadly, it is more often than not that we need to endure the consequences of our disobedience to God in order to bring our sin to light. It is God’s grace to bring us to such a point of realization that we would turn from our wickedness and follow Him in resolute vigor. Praise be to our God for His willingness and sovereign ability to sanctify us in this way, expressing His kindness in leading us to repentance.
