1 Thessalonians 1

Observation & Interpretation

In the opening words of his letter to the church in Thessalonica, Paul spoke of their having been chosen by God because the gospel came to them not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction (v. 4-5). The BBC provides helpful comment on the multiple dimensions of the delivery of the gospel:

It was in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance that it came to them: (1) In power. The message worked in their lives with supernatural energy, producing conviction of sin, repentance, and conversion. (2) In the Holy Spirit. This power was produced by the Holy Spirit. (3) In much assurance. Paul preached with great confidence in the message. The Thessalonians accepted it with much assurance as the word of God. The result in their lives was full assurance of faith.

Application

The gospel is good news but it arrives as far more than a mere message in written or oral form. Underlying the words are a power and a Spirit-led conviction of sin, a crushing realization of our corrupt nature, our due separation and punishment from a holy God as well as an utter rejoicing at the gracious sacrifice made by Christ that alone provides eternal salvation and relational reconciliation to Himself. May God’s people never reduce the gospel to less than its fullness of meaning, beholding it in its entirety that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
