Hebrews 2

Observation & Interpretation

Multiple times in the chapter, the author references the suffering of Jesus. Jesus was crowned with glory because of the suffering of death (Heb. 2:9), His “suffering death on a cross (Phil 2:8) provides the basis for His being crowned with glory and honor.” (FSB). The Founder of salvation, namely Jesus, was made perfect through suffering (Heb. 2:10). “The idea here is that Jesus was made whole (or complete) through His suffering and death; He already was sinless.” (FSB). Because Jesus suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted (Heb. 2:18). “His own temptations allow for Him to sympathize with the temptations of believers. Nonetheless, since Jesus overcame temptations, He expects believers to do the same (see Jas 1:2–18).” (FSB)

Application

The fact that the God of all creation condescended to humanity and took upon Himself temptation and suffering should never wane in our hearts. He experienced all that we do, but did so in perfect obedience to the Father. This is what makes Him the worthy sacrifice we desperately need. May we never tire of this truth, of the amazing love and grace of the Lord our God.
