John 19

Observation & Interpretation

This chapter records the events surrounding Jesus’ flogging, wrongful sentencing of crucifixion, the crucifixion and burial in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. One of the details that emerged in today’s reading was in the exchange between Pilate and Jesus when Pilate said to Jesus that he had the authority to both release and crucify Jesus. In His answer to Pilate, Jesus told him that he would have no such authority unless it had been given him from above and that, therefore, he who delivered Jesus over to him has the greater sin. Commenting on the latter, the BBC states:

“The one who delivered Me to you” may refer to: (1) Caiaphas, the high priest; (2) Judas, the betrayer; or (3) the Jewish people in general. The thought is that these Jews should have known better. They had the Scriptures which predicted the coming of the Messiah. They should have recognized Him when He came. But they rejected Him and were even now crying out for His life. This verse teaches us that there are degrees of guilt. Pilate was guilty, but Caiaphas, and Judas, and all the wicked Jews were more guilty.

Application

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23), but there is a spectrum on which guilt can fall. Taken in an analogous sense, there is a sizable difference between first-degree murder and jaywalking. The Catholic church makes a distinction between “mortal” and “venial” sins, but this is a false dichotomy. It is crucial to understand that God does not grade on a curve. Every human being is subject to the whole law and to fail in one point has become guilty of all of it (James 2:10). This should elicit a profound gratitude that Jesus’ blood shed and death on the cross cleanses us of all sin—from the least to the greatest—and satisfies completely the punishment we deserve from God. Let us not take lightly that God in His grace has wiped us clean of every sin and granted us right standing before Him through the sending and sacrifice of His only Son.
