1 Chronicles 6
Observation & Interpretation
1 Chron. 6:10 – The Chronicler points out that Azariah served as priest in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem.
- [Azariah is] Perhaps the son of Zadok who was a priest during Solomon’s reign (1 Kings. 4:2). (FSB)
1 Chron. 6:61-65 – The Chronicler describes that the rest of the Kohathites were given ten cities out of the half tribe of Manasseh.
- A noticeable feature of this long list is that the Levites were given dwelling space among the eastern tribes of Manasseh … Gad, and Reuben, as well as in the main territory on the west. Even though eventually this arrangement would remove them far from the temple, it also allowd them to be distributed throughout he land so they could teach all the people. (CSB Notes)
1 Chron. 6:1-81
- Both Levi’s central location in the genealogies..and the amount of detail afforded the tribe (only Judah is longer) demonstrate the importance of “the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.” (ESVEC – Section Overview)
- No more is priestly ministry dependent on one’s genealogy; rather, it depends on the gifting of the Spirit on all Christians. (ESVEC – Response
John 16
Observation & Interpretation
John 16:1 – Jesus expresses His purpose for saying what He was to His disciples: to keep them from falling away.
- The disciples probably cherished the hope of the Jewish people generally—that the Messiah would set up His kingdom and that the power of Rome would be broken. Instead of that, the Lord told them that He was going to die, rise again, and go back to heaven. The Holy Spirit would come, and the disciples would go out as witnesses for Christ. They would be hated and persecuted. The Lord told them all this in advance so that they would not be disillusioned, made to stumble, or shocked. (BBC)
John 16:2 – Jesus spoke of how the hour was coming when those who persecute the disciples will think that they are offering service to God.
- The Christian faith would be so hated that those who sought to stamp it out would thinkg they were pleasing God. This shows how a person may be very sincere, very zealous, ad yet very wrong…Failure to recognize the deity of Christ lay a4t the root of the matter. The Jews would not receive Him, and in so doing, they refused to receive the Father. (BBC)
John 16:8-11 – Jesus provides three areas of concern in which the coming Spirit would convict the world:
- Sin: because they do not believe Jesus
- Righteousness: because Jesus goes to the Father
- Judgement: because the ruler of this world is judged
- The Holy Spirit would convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. This generally taken to mean that He creates an inward awareness of these things in the life of the individual sinner. While this is true ,it is not exactly the teaching of this portion. The Holy Spirit condemns the world by the very fact that He is here. He should not be here, because the Lord Jesus should be here, reigning over the world. But the world rejected Him, and He went back to heaven. The Holy Spirit is here in place of a rejected Christ, and this demonstrates the world’s guilt. (BBC)
John 6:32 – Jesus described how the disciples would scatter and leave Him but that He is not alone because the Father is with Him.
- Jesus’ prediction of a coming hour at which his followers will be scattered cp. 19:27) may allude to Zech. 13:7 (quoted in Matt. 26:31, cp. Matt. 26:56; 1 Kings 22:17). The sheep would desert the Shepherd and return home, and yet Jesus would not be alone due to the constant presence of his Father. (CSB Notes)
John 16:4b-15 – The sorrow of the disciples eclipsed their concern for what Jesus was about to accomplish (16:5-6), even though what Jesus was leaving to do would enable him to send the Spirit to them (v. 7). This teaches us that when we face undesired developments, we can be confident that God has a plan involving his conforming us to the image of Christ and resulting in his being glorified. Thus we can always trust in God’s wisdom and hope in his goodness…Let us ask the Father in the name of Jesus to cause the Spirit to enable us to see the glory of Christ. (ESVEC – Response)
