1 Chronicles 24
Observation & Interpretation
1 Chron. 24:2 – Nadab and Abihu died before their father.
- Nadab and Abihu offered unauthorized fire.
- The Chronicler does not mention that Nadab and Abihu died prematurely because they defiled the tabernacle (Lv. 10:1-2). It was more important to him that since they died without children, they had no descendants to include in the priestly divisions. (CSB Notes)
1 Chron. 24:4 – More chief men were found among the sons of Eleazar than of Ithamar, This drove how they were to be organized.
- Since Eleazar’s descendants outnumbered Ithamar’s by a ratio of two to one, it made sense that of the twenty-four divisions, Eleazar should get sixteen shifts, and Ithamar only eight. (CSB Notes)
1 Chron. 24:31 – The head of each fathers’ house, and his younger brothers alike, cast lots.
- The Levites also cast their lot before David and the princes. The lot apparently determined the division to which each man was assigned. (BBC)
