1 Chronicles 11
Observation & Interpretation
1 Chron. 11:2 – The Israelites spoke of how David led out and brought in Israel, even when Saul was king.
- … this peaceful assertion by all Israel of blood relationship with David and his entitlement to the throne was as pragmatic as it was firm. The people even quoted the Lord’s approval of David, even though some of them had fought against him not too long ago. (CSB Notes)
1 Chron. 11:4 – David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, where the Jebusites were.
- (v. 4-9) King David’s first order of business was to secure a capital for himself. These verses tell how Jerusalem was taken. (BBC)
1 Chron. 11:18-19 – David would not drink of the water drawn from the well of Bethlehem by the three mighty men.
- (v. 15-19) When David complained of thirst, three of his men risked their lives to break through the Philistine camp and make off with some water from the city of Bethlehem for the king. But David refused to drink it. He poured it on the ground as an offering to God, stating that if he drank it, it would be as though he were drinking the blood of these three heroes. (CSB Notes)
John 21
Observation & Interpretation
John 21:1 – Jesus revealed Himself to His disciples at the Sea of Tiberias.
- Sea of Tiberias…was an alternate name for the Sea of Galilee. Herod Antipas founded Tiberias, the largest city on the Sea of Galilee, in honor of his patron, the Roman emperor Tiberias (AD 14-37). The name gained currency the end of the first century. (CSB Notes)
John 21:6 – Jesus told the disciples to cast their nets on the right side of the boat.
- The “right” is often portrayed in the Bible as the favored side, although care must be taken not to read into this. The verse speaks most regarding Jesus’ sovereign knowledge.
John 21:9 – When the disciples got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place with fish and bread laid on it.
- Bread and fish are common food items in Scripture.
- We do not know whether the Lord caught these fish or whether He obtained them miraculously. But we do learn that He is not dependent on our poor efforts.
John 21:12 – In response to Jesus’ invitation to have breakfast, non of the disciples dare ask Him who He was because the knew who He was.
- The disciples felt a strange sense of awe and solemnity in the presence of the Lord. There He stood in His resurrection body. There were many questions they would like to have asked Him. But they did not dare. They new it was the Lord—even if the felt a certain sense of mystery shrouded His Person. (BBC)
