Application

In Genesis, Joseph’s brothers attributed his rough treatment of them to what they had done to him twenty years earlier (even without knowing that it was Joseph speaking with them). Later, upon discovering the money in their sacks and worried that they would be pursued as criminals, they assigned this to be God’s doing. By their reactions, the brothers showed themselves to be carrying a great amount of guilt. Such heaviness can be a good thing if it leads to Godly sorrow and repentance but entirely unfruitful if the heart remains mired in selfishness and self-pity.

Peter’s denial of being one of Jesus’ disciples in Mark continues the theme of guilt, responding in true contrition to the rooster crowing and remembering what Jesus had said to him. Mark records how he “broke down and wept”, tears of sorrow rightfully shed for rejecting association with his Lord. May we see in Peter’s failure an opportunity to—when confronted or questioned by others of our faith—proclaim boldly the One we serve and do so without reservation.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to respond properly to guilt, that my heart would be broken for how I have wronged you. Help me to feel the weight of it as I need and that it would lead to course correction and a deeper intimacy with You.
