Genesis 46

God was faithful to His promise to be with Jacob and to make him into a great nation. Jacob and his offspring settled in the land of Goshen—the most fertile section of Egypt near the delta of the Nile—and went on to be “fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong”. (Exod. 1:7). It was God’s presence and favor that led to their growth and prosperity. He had chosen them for His own possession, not setting His love on them because they were more in number, for they were the fewest of all peoples. God selects those He wills to bless and ours is to respond in gratitude that He would bestow such love on His sinful, rebellious creatures.

Luke 2

Jesus’ arrival elicited a wide spectrum of heightened fear, puzzlement, joy and gratitude. The shepherds were “filled with great fear”—in shock that a divine messianic ruler had been born—but when they saw Him lying in the manger, “they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child” (Luke 2:17). Simeon responded joyfully by taking Jesus into his arms and blessed God with a song. Anna, the prophetess, gave thanks to God and spoke of Jesus “to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:38b). Our reaction to the Messiah’s coming should likewise evoke emotions of this intensity as it leads to passionate declaration of His salvation that He has prepared in the presence of all peoples.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your faithfulness, that all Your promises find their Yes in Christ. How wonderful it is that You pour Your gracious love onto Your children, not choosing to cast away but to redeem and restore. May your people proclaim Your greatness and the hope of salvation found only in You.
